Team Manager talks 2015 turning points to La Gazzetta dello Sport ahead of the paddock’s return to Sepang

As the Malaysian GP appears around the corner, Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s Lin Jarvis talked to La Gazzetta dello Sport about the events of last year at the same track – after they sent shockwaves through the title fight. In the interview in the printed newspaper on Sunday, Jarvis talks about 2015, the future of Rossi's career - and the door being open for a Lorenzo return.
“2015 only got complicated when Valentino was convinced that the race in Australia had been manipulated, and after the Press Conference in Malaysia, everything changed,” explained the Brit. “I would have liked Valentino to not have spoken about it or said anything. Riders should be quieter. I don’t think always saying exactly what you think is necessarily a good idea. And that’s applicable to Valentino and Jorge.
"If Rossi hadn’t been so hard on Marquez in the Press Conference in Sepang, I’m convinced it wouldn’t have created the huge reaction from Marquez that it did. It was Valentino’s mistake.”
Rossi was penalised for a move on Marquez during the race last year in Sepang. With the penalty points from the event added to another for a previous offence in Misano, the Italian was forced to start the Valencian GP from the back of the grid - as Lorenzo won the race and took the title.
“Valentino could have been Champion if he stayed quiet, but instead, the situation exploded," continued the Team Manager. "They’re riders – hot headed and emotional – and you can’t control them, only give them advice. Valentino could have dealt with the situation in a different way and then maybe Sepang and the Championship would have had a different outcome. And Jorge played his part, feeling offended by Valentino.
“Valentino has always been a master of psychological warfare. But when you find yourself in a situation where you’re facing someone just like you – maybe it doesn’t work, or maybe it has the opposite reaction to what you expected. I still think that if Valentino had managed the situation differently, the final result of the Championship could have been different.”
Now, Jarvis believes Rossi could race on beyond the end of his current contract - 2018 - and also stated that after 9 years and 3 MotoGP™ World Championships together, the door for Lorenzo would remain open for a return from Ducati in the future.
